Evaluating Fault-Mode Protection Levels at the Aircraft in Category III LAAS

چکیده

This paper presents a new approach for assessing faultmode risk in a Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) such as the Federal Aviation Administration’s Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS). According to current GBAS standards, the ground system is burdened with the full responsibility for protecting users from hazardous navigation errors that might result from a satellite fault. Unfortunately, the current architecture penalizes most users, since the ground system must protect a hypothetical worst-case aircraft. Given the aggressive performance requirements of next generation (Category III) LAAS, this paper proposes an alternative architecture, which would transmit additional information to airborne users and thereby eliminate performance penalties associated with worst-case assumptions. Specifically, the proposed alternative GBAS architecture would shift the evaluation of fault-mode error bounds, also known as protection levels, away from the ground station to the user avionics. Fully backwards-compatible, the modified architecture would continue to serve legacy users while providing significant benefits to users with newer equipment. By evaluating fault-mode protection levels at the airborne user, the new architecture leverages information unavailable to the ground station including the user position and velocity, the subset of satellites selected by the user for navigation, and the magnitude of user-receiver errors. By leveraging knowledge of these details, the new architecture eliminates worst-case assumptions and results in tighter error bounds with higher availability.

A Comprehensive Integrity Verification Architecture for On-Airport LAAS Category III Precision Landing

Future Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) architectures will most likely be constrained to lie on airport property. Such a system must provide protection against rare events in the GPS Signal in Space (SIS) that pose danger to airborne users conducting Category III precision landings. By allowing the aircraft to combine ground integrity information with its own checks in order to make the fi...

Assessment of Ionospheric Impact on LAAS Using WAAS Supertruth Data

In order to reflect the impact of spatial ionospheric gradients on Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) users, the LAAS Ground Facility (LGF) broadcasts a conservative standard deviation (σvert_iono_gradient or σvig) for these errors that is included in the calculation of protection levels (bounds on user position errors). However, "supertruth" data provided by the Wide Area Augmentation Syste...

Dual-Frequency Smoothing for CAT III LAAS: Performance Assessment Considering Ionosphere Anomalies

Strong ionosphere storms are the most-threatening potential fault mode for the Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS). Multi-frequency GPS techniques are known to be an effective means of reducing or removing ionosphereinduced problems. Among those techniques, of great interest are Divergence-Free smoothing (denoted here as DFree) and Ionosphere-Free smoothing (denoted here as IFree). This paper...

The Impact of Measurement Biases on Availability for CAT III LAAS

The original error description for the Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) assumed unbiased measurement errors. In practice, however, satellite ranging errors may exhibit nonzero means. The LAAS error bound must account for these biases. This requirement places a particularly stringent demand on Category III (CAT III) LAAS, a future LAAS variant that will enable safe automated landing through...

LAAS Ground Facility Design Improvements to Meet Proposed Requirements for Category II/III Operations

Stanford University has developed a Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) ground facility prototype known as the Integrity Monitor Testbed (IMT) to demonstrate the feasibility of LAAS precision approaches under Category I conditions. While the Category I IMT is essentially complete, research on IMT algorithms continues to improve its performance so that it can eventually meet Category II/III ap...
